Abstract

A principios de siglo, aparecieron los primeros estudios que sugerían que la exposición a concentraciones más altas de lo recomendado de fluoruro durante el embarazo y los primeros meses de vida podía afectar negativamente al coeficiente intelectual. Datos del Programa Nacional de Toxicología (NTP, por sus siglas en inglés) de 2024 lo ponen en duda. Recientemente ha resurgido la controversia sobre el posible impacto que puede tener el fluoruro sistémico sobre el desarrollo neurocognitivo de los bebés.

En esta revisión no estructurada, se ha consultado la literatura para encontrar información que permita realizar una breve descripción de los antecedentes históricos de la fluoración del agua y su efecto sobre la prevención de la caries, así como la evidencia actual sobre su forma de acción. También se revisan los datos de prevalencia de la caries en México y la forma en que el fluoruro podría ser tóxico, y se presentan los datos a favor y en contra del debate sobre el posible daño al coeficiente intelectual.
